Conan the Barbarian #105 Story Summary

Even Conan knew that he could never remain War-Chief of the Bamulas forever, after claiming the title way back in Conan the Barbarian #101 by slaying the monster arachnid. And then there was that time he led them against vampires in Conan the Barbarian #103, and Conan the Barbarian #104, and many of them died. It would seem that by Conan issue 105, the Bamulas have finally had enough of him after the tribe's shamans blame him for the recent droughts, wars, fires, and plagues (to be fair, Conan probably did have something to do with the wars after attacking all of their enemies...)

After a tribe's witch-doctor points a finger at Conan and calls for his death, Conan loses patience and strikes the man dead. Before the Bamulas can react, he crushes a bunch of them under a gigantic idol and then flees into the wilderness as arrows rain down upon him.

Conan makes his way northward toward Kush, hunting and foraging along the way. Unfortunately for him, angry witch-doctors turn out to be the least of his problems as he finds himself hunted by lions! While cooking his dinner over an open flame, a pride of lions attacks him, and Conan can't shoot them fast enough with his bow and arrow, so he runs toward a strange structure in the distance. The lions stop dead in their tracks and refuse to follow him.

Surely the strange temple-like structure is haunted or something, but Conan figures it can't be worse than being eaten by lions, so he sneaks into the crumbling ruins and falls asleep during a creepy thunderstorm.

The ancient stone structure is not just haunted, it is really haunted, and the spirits of thousands of warriors who died there over the eons want to take Conan's soul as he sleeps, but they can't because they don't have a physical form. So, as Conan dreams away, the evil spirits combine into one magnificent monster with a physical form and prepare to attack.

Meanwhile, a Stygian raiding party decides to camp in the same structure to avoid the storm. They get drunk and fall asleep, unaware of Conan and the gargantuan evil spirit mashup looking for blood. Fortunately for Conan, the Stygians make for better prey than he. Unfortunately for the Stygians, they wake to find themselves being eaten by an enormous monster that resembles the thing from The Thing when it's eating the dogs in the pen.

Conan watches in horror as the Stygian warriors try to fight it in its ghastly, tentacled form. As fast as they chop off its limbs, the creature regrows them and forms new mouths with which to eat them.

Conan is like "#$!@ this!" and runs away to fight another day in Conan the Barbarian #106.

Readers get a good laugh. The Stygians are slowly digested by a dream monster. Such is life in Conan's world...
