Conan the Barbarian #106 Story Summary

After escaping the Castle of Whispering Shadows in Conan the Barbarian #105, Conan continues his ride northward on a stolen Stygian horse toward the city of Meroe.

Meanwhile, in Meroê, strange things are amiss as Amboola of Kush awaits his fate in a cell after plotting to overthrow Queen Tanada. A mysterious form emerges from the darkness of Amboola's cell, first as a snout in the dark, and then as a hideous wolf-man-like form! Moments later, Amboola is dead.

Elsewhere in the city, a man named Afari wakes Lord Tuthmes and tells him of the murder in the prison. He speaks of a demon called the Invisible Terror! Tuthmes plans to use this news to incite an uprising and spark conflict among the city's various factions.

As the queen rides through the city flanked by her guards, all hell is about to break loose. At that moment, Conan the Barbarian decides to ride into town looking for his usual flagon of ale. Unfortunately for Conan, at that moment, the rocks start flying as the uprising begins. Queen Tanada is pulled from her horse and nearly torn to shreds by an angry mob.

Never one to stand idly by as a woman is assaulted, Conan leaps into the fray and saves Tanada's life while slaying numerous foes in the process. As Conan was looking for work, anyway, she hires him as a bodyguard on the spot.

Meanwhile, the scheming Lord Tuthmes plans to give Tanada the gift of a blond-haired slave woman from Argos to serve as a spy. He threatens her life by showing her the Invisible Terror that he controls! She faints.

Later, she is given to Queen Tanada as a gift, but Tanada is suspicious and orders that she be chained and tortured. Conan, though employed by the queen, refuses to let her beat the girl, and the issue ends on a cliffhanger, leading to its conclusion in Conan the Barbarian #107.
