G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #11 Story Summary
After meeting the classic lineup in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1, and saving the world countless times, four new Joes and a snowmobile join the team. Wild Bill, the Joe's new helicopter pilot, drops off Gung Ho, Doc, and Snow Job to relieve Short-Fuse, Steeler, and Grand Slam, who were wounded during a firefight with Cobra. They also unload the new G.I. Joe Battle Bear snowmobile.
Rock 'N Roll immediately complains about the C-rations and makes fun of Gung Ho for running around Alaska in five below zero weather without a shirt.
After ambushing a column of Cobra H.I.S.S. tanks following an American pipeline, the Joes have them on the run. Cobra withdraws to an Alaskan piping station. Hawk and Snow Job do recon and see Cobra soldiers unloading mysterious canisters.
Back at Cobra headquarters in Springfield, Cobra Commander and the Baroness bring in their newest recruit, Cobra Commander's surrogate commander in the field, the specialist Destro. Destro flies to Alaska.
Snow Job and Rock 'N Roll burst in and shoot up the pumping station, killing numerous Cobra soldiers, but also hitting the canisters and exposing a new strain of plague toxin! Doc calls headquarters for an antidote, but a wounded Cobra soldier tells him it's a new strain and the only antidote is in the hands of Cobra's new "specialist", who left just before the Joes arrived (Destro). The Joes only have six hours to live!
A Cobra unit doubles back and attacks their position. Hawk sends Doc, Snow Job, and Snake-Eyes out after the rest of them fight off Cobra in a firefight. Snake-Eyes and the team run over a group of Cobras in the Battle Bear and steal their RPG.
Nearby, Cobra continues their assault on Alaska by attacking a nuclear power plant and stealing plutonium. While the Joes in the Battle Bear track them down, Cobra attacks with a new weapon: Cobra Hang Gliders! What they didn't account for, though, is that G.I. Joe brought their own hang glider and specialty troop to fly it, named Airborne (first appearance Airborne).
Airborne distracts the Cobra hang gliders while Snake-Eyes shoots them down with the RPG. Meanwhile, A Joe helicopter reaches the pumping station, but Cobra brought a surface-to-air missile. Before they can shoot it down, Gung-Ho rushes the Cobra position and punches them all out. Elsewhere, while trying to figure out what Cobra did to the oil pipeline, Doc and Snow Job radio ahead to Zap, who barges in on oil company employees launching a probe. The oil company men are actually Cobra, and one of them is Destro!
Destro jokes about the antidote to the toxin, and Doc throws a snowball at him, knocking it from his hand. Destro escapes and blows up the Battle Bear with his wrist missiles. Doc outsmarts Cobra and flies south to one of the other pumping stations, where he informs the Cobra soldiers about their exposure to the toxin and six hours to live. He trades them the antidote for the plutonium that Cobra was smuggling down the pipeline.
The Joes get shots of antidote, and everyone lives, even Destro, who escapes to fight another day in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #12.
