Conan the Barbarian #109 Story Summary
After teaming up with the apprentice sorcerer Erfu in Conan the Barbarian #108 and riding away from the city of Sukhmet, the unlikely companions find themselves under fire in the Sea of Buryat, a virtual ocean of tall grass. Erfu says the grass is haunted by the Spirits of the Devil-Grass.
Conan and Erfu hide in the grass as Erfu tries to remove an arrow from his arm. The Sons of Shem, riding on horseback, surround them. Conan fights with a bow and arrow and a spear, killing many. Erfu pulls off a little magic trick, making moaning and wailing sounds to scare the riders. But, as the two sneak through the grass, Erfu finds himself under attack by a mysterious mist that lifts him off the ground. Conan slashes it with his sword, and then they stumble upon a dead Shemite and his mount in the grass.
As they continue, the pair spy a line of blond-haired warriors ahead of them, marching through the tall grass. But, as Conan rushes forward to greet them, he encounters a group of dwarves with whips. The dwarves attack, while the men of the north with blond hair stand back and watch. Conan reluctantly kills the dwarves until the final one makes a strange roaring sound and dies on the spot.
A confused Conan speaks to the Northmen, the Aesir. One of them recognizes him, and Conan knows the man Niord. He explains to Conan that the dwarves could summon a powerful monster, which is why they did not try to escape or help. Conan doesn't believe him until he hears a roar and turns to see a gigantic Godzilla-sized bear towering above them.
