G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #5 Story Summary

One of the all-time great G.I. Joe issues opens up with the lovely Scarlett standing in front of the MOBAT tank giving Steeler, Clutch and Breaker a hard time. The guys are all interested in Scarlett (can you blame them?), but Scarlett only has eyes for weapons and military strategy.

Scarlett also has a sense of humor and great taste in video games, too. Steeler shows her some of the tank's fancy electronics, and she asks if it will play a Pac-Man game cartridge.

Last, but not least, Steeler shows her that the tank has a microphone and external speakers! Is the MOBAT powered by Radio Shack?

Why is the tank getting all this love? General Flagg insists that the Joes roll the super-advanced-Radio-Shack-powered-Pac-Man-playing tank by the Joint Chiefs in the New York City Military Day Parade.

The Joint Chiefs aren't the only ones who want to sneak a peek at the MOBAT, though. The evil terrorist organization, Cobra, uses an X-ray scanner to scan secret documents about the tank and then sends them via a courier to Cobra Commander. Cobra Commander, who is shooting cardboard cutouts of Scarlett and Stalker, is overjoyed at this news and wants to steal the tank in the middle of the parade!

Parade day is here, and the MOBAT rolls down Fifth Avenue in style. Sadly, it is unarmed, and one wonders how they don't crash into anything because Steeler is too busy staring at majorettes' behinds using the tank's camera gear. Wait a second... those aren't just majorettes, they're Cobra soldiers!

Cobra rolls up behind the tank with a parade float and tries to swallow the tank while the majorettes provide cover, but the Joes snap into action and drive away while Cobra arms itself with machine guns and attacks.

As Breaker chews his tenth pack of gum for the day, they manage to escape Cobra in the chaos of a fleeing crowd and hide the tank in a construction site. They figure out that Cobra Commander must be nearby to give orders, and hope to capture him. Steeler comes up with a plan...

They hide the tank in a lake in Central Park and then drive out when Cobra approaches, making explosion and gunfire sounds with their Radio Shack speaker array. They capture all of the Cobras who surrender before the might of Radio Shack electronics and mouth-made gun sounds.

While completing the parade, covered in mud, Clutch discovers that Cobra Commander might be hiding beneath the stand where the Joint Chiefs are watching! They crash the tank into the stand, sending all of the military brass running, and reveal a secret Cobra commander center that includes the Baroness and Cobra Commander himself!

General Flagg draws his gun at Cobra Commander, who is surrounded by Girl Scouts in the chaos. He holds his fire, and Cobra Commander shoots him in the head, grazing him. Cobra Commander gets away to fight another day in G.I. Joe #6, Scarlett patches General Flagg's head up, and Breaker chews more gum.

Yo, Joe!
