G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #4 (October 1982), published by Marvel Comics, titled "Operation Wingfield!" Can G.I. Joe save the world from a private militia whose intent is to nuke Russia and start World War III?
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #4 Story Summary
Commander Wingfield leads a "Strike First" militia funded by none other than the bad guys at Cobra! G.I. Joe issue #4 opens up with Wingfield shouting at his men and then shooting at them with live ammunition during a training exercise.
In G.I. Joe headquarters, the Joes watch a film about this guy, and then proceed to infiltrate the militia. Hawk and Grunt will go in undercover and discover Cobra's involvement, while Snake-Eyes and Stalker provide support from the outside.
Hawk and Grunt board a bus and then join the ranks in the private militia version of basic training. Snake-Eyes watched with binoculars from outside their compound, but then sneaks in at night to eavesdrop on Wingfield's plans to drop a nuclear bomb on Russia and start World War III.
Meanwhile, Hawk and Grunt sneak around and discover that the armory is filled with Cobra tanks. They're discovered and nearly captured. Snake-Eyes manages to send a transmission back to The Pit, alerting them to the militia's plans.
A militia soldier named Carruthers takes off in a B-29 with a nuclear warhead, headed to Russia. Hawk steals a jet and chases after it. High over the Pacific Coast of Canada, Hawk doesn't waste any time shooting the Super Fortress down.
Wingfield's backup plan is to use a second bomb to nuke their own compound, but his wife isn't nearly as excited about it as he is. She shoots him as the G.I. Joe team rushes in. She tells them he set a 10-minute timer as a countdown to armageddon. Snake-Eyes and Zap locate the nuclear warhead and open it up, and with just a few seconds left until the end of days, Grunt dismantles the detonator and saves the day!
