Absolute Batman #16 (March 2026), published by DC Comics, titled "Bat Out of Hell." Batman and Wonder Woman travel through another realm to a bridge where they fight Akrolis, a centaur, for a special artifact to help Waylon, who was transformed into a giant crocodile.
Absolute Batman #16 Story Summary
Gotham City rebuilds after Batman's fight with Bane. Bruce visits his horribly disfigured and maimed friends in the hospital, none of whom seem particularly thrilled to see him. He leaves them with some takeout.
Batman visits the Gotham Museum of Natural History. He pulls out a relic and summons Diana from the Absolute Wonder Woman series. She appears, scowling, out of a magic gateway in the middle of the museum. Apparently, Batman's relic, the Talisman of Hecate (which he picked up from Absolute Wonder Woman #15), only works three times, so she assumes this must be important.
It turns out that Batman is looking for a way to help his friend Waylon, who was turned into a crocodile in the previous story arc. Diana knows of a way, but it lies in another realm, and the journey is dangerous. Batman never shies away from danger, so he enters the portal and enters a place that exists between the surface world and the underworld called Aeaea. It is dangerous, but Batman loves danger. Also, the comic book would be super boring without more danger.
Batman and Diana walk for days, avoiding lightning strikes, monsters, and various other murderous things. Eventually, they arrive at their destination. A bridge guarded by Akrolis, a centaur, Lord of the Transformation. Diana gives Bruce a special potion and puts coins over his eyes as he sleeps.
Bruce dreams of his father.
The next day, Batman and Diana battle Akrolis for the artifact they need to save Waylon. Akrolis proves to be a formidable centaur and kicks Batman off the bridge, who falls and hitches a ride on a "Bat-Centaur." He takes an arrow for Diana.
She defeats Akrolis, but Batman is wounded with an arrow sticking out of his chest. Thankfully, when he wakes up back in Gotham, the arrow is the artifact he sought after all.
