Absolute Batman issue 18 cuts back and forth from the battle to scenes from Ivy's past as her mother, Dr. Isley, keeps her heart in a laboratory after a terrible fire witnessed in the previous issue. Ivy's heart is all that remains of her, yet it is still conscious. Ivy expresses her anger at the men who did this to her to stop her research.
She continues to fight Batman out of pure rage, with an eclectic arsenal of plant-based weapons, all the while messing around inside his head and trying to get Batman to breathe in her virus. She warns of a coming threat, a threat even greater than her. Grimm.
Ivy wants to release her spores to change Gotham into something new and beautiful, something like a "New Kingdom".
Scenes from Bruce's near past indicate that Mr. Gordon, the man in love with Bruce Wayne's mom, knows that he is the Batman. Gordon's daughter, Officer Gordon, shows up to help Batman with a S.W.A.T. team. She gives Batman a special sound gun.
Batman threatens to destroy the last human part of Ivy, her heart, unless she stops the spores. She complies, but Batman destroys it anyway.
