Absolute Batman #1 (October 2024), published by DC Comics, is titled, "The Zoo" Part one of six. This bold re-imagining of Bruce Wayne, Batman, and Gotham City is the debut of the publisher’s Absolute Universe imprint and a memorable new take on a beloved classic.
Absolute Batman #1 Story Summary
Take everything that you know about Batman and throw it away, sort of, but not really. Perhaps a better way to phrase it is to re-imagine everything that you know about Batman and view it from a different perspective in another universe.
He's not just a tortured rich kid in a huge mansion this time around; Bruce Wayne is the son of a teacher who survives a tragic shooting at the Gotham Zoo. His dad, of course, does not, which sends Bruce on his quest to be the biggest, baddest, and smartest vigilante in the city (so it's like the same thing, but different, you dig?)
Soldier of fortune Alfred Pennyworth rides into Gotham on a mission to conduct surveillance on the Party Animals, a murderous group of terrorists looting and killing indiscriminately throughout Gotham City. His instructions are to avoid Batman.
Mayor Jim Gordon holds a town meeting and, of course, the Party Animals show up to kill everything. Batman has other ideas and cuts them to shreds. He even removes his nifty new Bat-Logo and uses it as an ax to liberate a thug's arm from his body.
The first Absolute Batman gives some backstory on this new version of Bruce Wayne and features a brief encounter with Pennyworth that ends with Bruce dramatically repurposing his fancy bike.
