G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #9 (March 1983), published by Marvel Comics, titled "The Diplomat". After discovering a secret Cobra data tape about a planned assassination, Scarlett and Clutch go to the French Riviera on a bodyguard mission that turns into a full-blown James Bond movie complete with car chases, crashing airplanes, captured helicopters, ski jumping chase scenes, and poison gas!
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #9 Story Summary
After Cobra attacks the Space Shuttle and retreats in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #8, the Joes take the fight to Cobra by assaulting one of their safe-houses in Nebraska.
Stalker kicks down the door, and the Cobras immediately start to erase their computers. Breaker rushes in to save the data, but pulls up a live video of Cobra Commander laughing at him. They rush out of the building before it explodes. Thankfully, early 1980s computer technology is hard as nails, and Breaker swiped the computer's portapack "backup drive".
The tape drive contains Cobra's plans to assassinate a State Department diplomat named Brian Hassell, who is in talks with the nation of Al-Alawi. Hawk assigns Clutch and Scarlett to guard Hassell, while Stalker and Snake-Eyes are to track down someone who knows something about the plan.
Hassell goes on vacation to the French Riviera, where a bikini-clad Scarlett watches over him. Cobra attacks from the water, and Clutch fights them off with a machine gun that he hid inside a sand castle. Cobra then tries to assassinate him in his hotel room, but Scarlett and Clutch save the day, again.
Meanwhile, Stalker and Snake-Eyes track down a Cobra operative in London. The operative is then remotely electrocuted by Cobra Commander.
While that happens, Scarlett, Clutch, and Hassell race to the airport in a sports car while Cobra gives chase and shoots at them. After blowing up the enemy with a grenade, they reach the tarmac and take off. Unfortunately, the pilot has been compromised by Cobra and pulls a gun on Scarlett. She knocks him out, and Clutch lands the plane, which nearly falls out of the sky.
Stalker tracks down his lead to a hotel room, where he meets a holographic projection of Cobra Commander. He informs Stalker that Hassell is a Cobra mole and then gasses him. Snake-Eyes saves Stalker, and they rush to warn Clutch and Scarlett, who are currently fighting a Cobra helicopter with a machine gun while racing down a mountain pass in their sports car. The car crashes into a river, and the Cobra helicopter descends to take a closer look. Scarlett reaches out from beneath the water and grabs it for a ride, then takes over the helicopter. After saving Clutch and Hassell, Hassell pulls a gun on her.
The two Joes are captured and tied up in a mountain shed while Hassell's meeting with Al-Alawi takes place. Clutch and Scarlett easily escape their binds and ski down the mountain, James Bond-style, crash through the window, and save the day when Scarlett kicks Hassell in the face with her skis. One can almost hear Duran Duran playing in the background as a short gunfight takes place, Al-Alawi is saved by a bulletproof vest, and Stalker and Snake-Eyes apprehend Hassell.
