G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #8 Story Summary
G.I. Joe fights for freedom in the land, air, ocean, and even in space to defend the Space Shuttle from destruction. Cobra Commander and the Baroness launch an all-out attack against the Shuttle in Cape Canaveral as it sits on the launch pad waiting to take off.
From Cobra Commander's underwater "James Bond Bad-Guy Base", he directs a battalion of Cobra soldiers to attack the Shuttle with a variety of futuristic weapons, including walking "Sea Legs", super tanks, and an amphibious helicopter. His plan is to take out the Shuttle and establish space superiority so that he can rain ICBMs down on whoever he wants. Clearly, the U.S. Government doesn't want this to happen, so they direct G.I. Joe to establish a perimeter around the Shuttle and defend it at all costs.
Hawk commands the Joes as they do what they do best, destroy everything that moves using their special weapon or cool jet pack (in Stalker's case). As the Sea Legs emerge from the ocean and attack, Clutch and Steeler are there to greet them with the MOBAT tank. Rock 'N Roll uses his motorcycle's Gatling gun to tear their legs to shreds, and Grand Slam shoots them with a cannon.
Zap fires his bazooka, Short Fuse launches mortal shells, Scarlett throws explosives, and Snake-Eyes doesn't even break a sweat as he murders Cobra soldiers with his bare hands. Even Grunt gets a chance to shine as he shoots a guided missile out of the air with his M-16.
The Joes give the Shuttle time to launch, but Cobra isn't through yet. Cobra Commander launches a missile into orbit to destroy it! Thankfully, Breaker and Flash are there to save the day.
Even with his plan foiled, Cobra Commander continues to attack with his amphibious sea-base and fanatical suicide troops who would rather die than admit defeat at the hands of G.I. Joe.
The Joes win, but just barely. Cobra Commander escapes, and seems like a genuine threat to freedom-loving Space Shuttles everywhere! Yo Joe!
