Welcome back to 80sComics.com for the review of The Warlord issue number 51 from 1981, a re-presenting of the classic Warlord number 1. So this is good for those of you who don't have the first issue but want the first issue. If you want to know what's going on in this series, this is a good cheap way to figure it out. I like the cover and the back cover's got a Camaro Z28. So all good stuff. The Warlord. How does the series begin Well, like they all do, he's fighting a beautiful woman with a sword. And then we get to the actual story here. This savage world. Travis Morgan's SR-71 is shot down by the Russians. But then, instead of crashing and just exploding, he falls into the North Pole. Stick with me here. He falls into the North Pole and wraps around the inside of the Earth where there's another magical land and a sun on the inside of it. So this is science.
This is the way it really is, clearly. There's dinosaurs in there. And he saves Tara from a dinosaur. And of course they fall in love. Because that's the magic of Bubble Yum. And they make this journey. Here we get a nice scientific description of how this works. So there's gravity on the outside of the Earth. That's where all of us idiots live. But there's also gravity on the inside of the Earth, where these people live with dinosaurs and magicians and whatever.
Tara is lured outside by a magical song, which of course leads to Morgan punching out a satyr because, honestly all satyrs deserve to be punched out. So that worked out pretty well. But then they're captured by slavers and turned into slaves. That doesn't last long because you know they escape or else the series wouldn't go anywhere. But we've got plenty of action, plenty of adventure and a bonus story, which actually I haven't even read yet. Dragon Sword.
Sounds like an Atari game. Probably is an Atari game. Which doesn't look nearly as good as The Warlord, but we do get dragons and we do get swords. But most importantly, we get the wonderful Warlord adventure from Mike Grell, who's a good writer and a good artist too.
Very good artist. Sadly, the print quality and the paper quality aren't real good here, but the story is great, the characters are awesome, and it's The Warlord. What's not to love Warlord issue 51 on 80sComics.com and you'll be seeing a lot more of these...
