Greetings from the future, about forty some years ago. It’s Conan the Barbarian, issue number 57 from December of 1975 here on 80sComics.com. A barbarian chained. I love the cover of this issue. It’s very eye‑catching and striking with the red and Conan and his sweet haircut and all the stuff going on in the background. Even Conan has some bad days and this issue will show you what happens when Conan has a bad day. I mean, I’m fairly certain you know what happens when Conan has a bad day, but it’s fun to see it in action. I mean, look, that guy’s happy. He’s smiling.
I’m doing back‑to‑back sequential issues, 80s comics reviews here, even though it’s from the 70s. Fifty‑six I just did yesterday, fifty‑seven today. Doesn’t really pick up the same story, but it’s kind of a continuation with the same characters. After escaping the magic city that was created from the guy in Robocop who got spewed with toxic waste, now they find a different city, Mesantia, capital of Argos and its leading seaport.
Forty thousand inhabitants, blah‑bitty‑blah‑blah‑blah. Who’s gonna get stabbed this time. It’s drawn by Mike Ploug, a guest artist, and I like his work. He does a great job on faces. They’re very expressive. See, there’s Conan. Now, fans of Conan know that within moments of entering any city, Conan the Barbarian will get into a fight with somebody. Usually the guards or peasants are just idiots who happen to wander in front of him, or really anybody for that matter. If he doesn’t get into a fight in a city then you know it’s not Conan. So this is definitely Conan.
Back to your kennel, you cringing civilized dog. He pushes that guy into the mud, picks a fight with the king’s guards, and almost kills them but doesn’t. These funny, funny expressions in this one. Lots of people getting tossed into the mud so Conan immediately makes a bunch of enemies. They go and buy Tara a dress to try to disguise themselves. Of course it doesn’t work. Conan is hit in the face and captured. And he’s about to be sold to a pirate ship, which is a lot of fun. So obviously he kills everybody and escapes.
He talks to this crazy witch lady who shows him the future with boats, beautiful women, and violence. So basically a great day for Conan. And a great day for you if you’re a fan of Conan. Hey, there’s that custom van out again. I’m going to apply to that college and hope that they’re still in business. Surely the demand for custom vans is at an all‑time high now. Mobile shag carpet covered quarantine. That’s a custom van.
Now Conan is in chains and of course he’s going to break those chains and love killing everybody afterwards.
That’s right, I just worked an erasure joke into a Conan review because that’s how I roll. It’s 80sComics.com. Issue 57 is a fun read and remember to call your local comic shop and order a bunch of old school comics, 80s comics, Transformers, GI Joe, Conan. Get some great comics and have some fun. And then maybe you too can call the Custom Van Institute and maybe I’ll see you in class.
Here’s some more of those great 1970s ads. These ones are really funny, I like that. Before YouTube and the internet and all that crap, if you wanted to learn how to play guitar, you had to clip out the ad here or whatever. Go to New Jersey, learn from that girl. After you learn to be a veterinary assistant and talk to animals.
