Red Sonja #10 Story Summary

Red Sonja and Suumaro, the exiled heir to the throne, plan to sneak into the city of Skranos and spy upon their fortifications. As they silently glide down the river with a retinue of soldiers, suddenly they find themselves under attack by a pack of winged human-monsters from the sky!

The creatures wear a strange crimson lace and slash at Sonja and Suumaru with their sharp wings. Summaro says that they are sorcerous creations used by his mother, Apah Alah. The creatures kill everyone on the raft except for Sonja and Summaro, who eventually defeat them all. Then they round a bend in the river and come face to face with a massive temple built by Apah Alah.

As they dock their raft and walk towards the temple, Suumaro is attacked by another one of the winged monsters. Before Sonja can kill it, a strange man named Marmo emerges from the bushes and pleads for its life. The creature is his friend, he says.  Then he guides the pair into the castle, where they witness a bizarre scene of young women, in a trance, weaving lace.

In another room, they discover nests filled with strange, little glass-like eggs. Sonja pockets one, and then they see a wounded winged creature nearby. Marmo kills it. Sonja thinks he is quite mad.

She peeks inside an ornate chamber and finds it filled with tapestries, jewels, eggs, and a creature that looks like a half-man and half-horse sitting in the middle of it, blowing the glass eggs and then placing them in bowls. Marmo rushes into the room and stabs it to death.

The eggs begin to hatch little peacock-like creatures. Soon, the room fills with little monsters, and the wounded man-stallion crawls to Sonja and blinds her by touching her eyes. Marmo runs away, and Suumaro guides Sonja out of the room. But, before they can escape, one of the little winged creatures grows to the size of the castle and grabs Suumaro and Sonja, and then flies away.

The issue ends on a cliffhanger and resumes in Red Sonja #11.
