Conan the Barbarian #46 Story Summary

After leaving the Dark Valley in Conan the Barbarian #45, Conan rides a grey horse through the wasteland along the Border Kingdom while strange inhuman shapes watch him from a distance. These creatures are called the Yemli, and they track Conan through the desert.

For a moment, Conan lets his guard down, and they attack. He fights them off. Then, a strange man named Merdoramon the Magician greets Conan from out of nowhere and invites him to dine on the desert floor with him.

Merdoramon has a task that he would like Conan to perform. He needs a strong man to carry a strange cube-shaped amulet with a blue fire inside it to the province of Phalkar. There it must be delivered to Themas Herklar, regent of Phalkar. Conan doesn't agree, but the magician pays him a bag of coins and tells him that he'll die otherwise. Conan begrudgingly agrees.

Conan sleeps, and the next morning rides for Phalkar through the land of Sfanol, where he enters a town that is about to burn a young woman alive at the stake. They accuse her of being a witch and a "familiar" of the dead sorcerer Zoqquanor, who caused bad times to fall over the town. Conan tells them to stop, and, of course, the armed townsfolk draw their swords.

All those who attack Conan die quickly as he dispenses with them, barely breaking a sweat. He frees the girl, and together they proceed to ride out of town. However, the girl wants to go to the Great Hall of Zoqquanor rather than flee to Phalkar.

Conan laughs at her and inquires as to why, and she tells him that her name is Stefanya and that Zoqquanor placed a spell on her so that if he dies, she dies (it is implied that he kept her around for cleaning and housework). Conan thinks she is nuts, but wants to sleep with her, so he helps her look for Zoqquanor, who she claims is still alive.

While searching for him in the burned Great Hall, previously set ablaze by the villagers, she flirts with Conan, who kindly slaps her ass. She climbs the stairs to search the second floor and emits a terrible scream! Conan races to her rescue and discovers a giant monster who looks like a disco ball mixed with a gorilla named Shokkoth!

She screams for Conan to kill it, so he tries by swinging his sword in vain, unable to penetrate its rock-like disco skin. Shokkoth merely takes his sword and slowly lumbers toward the girl, screaming, "Fool! Nothing can harm Shokkoth of the many stones!"

Thankfully, Conan is smarter than he looks and notices that some of the stones near Shokkoth's feet have come off where it stands in pools of liquid. Conan quickly grabs a vial off the sorcerer's shelf and throws it at the monster's face, causing it to break apart and collapse into a screaming pile of rocks.

Stefanya and Conan discover Zoqquannor's body in the next room, neither alive nor dead! She swears to bring him back to life!
