Lobo returns in his own brand new series for 2026, Lobo issue number one. But did he ever go away? Lobo has been with us for so long. I’ve got this sitting right here, the Lobo Big Fraggin Compendium One, which contains Lobo’s first appearance in Omega Men, which is kind of odd because it doesn’t look anything like Lobo. Though Omega Men is a great comic book series in its own right.
This also has the Simon Bisley issues, the ones I read as a teenager. And these are the ones I fell in love with Lobo, or I fell in love with Lobo. I still have my original copies put away at the moment, but they’re reprinted here. And as you can see, Simon Bisley’s style is just unmistakable. And that really set the stage for Lobo, the character, the art direction. And I’d say that’s pretty well carried over here.
Now, Simon Bisley does not do the art. Instead, we get the incredibly talented Jorge Corona, who did some terrific work on the Transformers series, the Energon Universe Transformers books. So this is what the new Lobo looks like. Love the color work. There’s just so much great detail they put everywhere. You can spend a lot of time admiring this. That is Lobo, who is a psychotic bounty hunter, for those of you who don’t know.
He shows up at this space bar where there’s a no parking sign. He parks there, this alien confronts him, and what does Lobo do? He rips off his arm and writes “Lobo parking” on the no parking sign. So if you’re new to Lobo and you’re like, what’s this all about? Pretty much that. That’s just the kind of character that Lobo is.
And he’s showing up to collect the bounty, but then he finds all these people in the bar, all of the bar patrons watching a reality TV show, which sends him into a rage and they’re like, what’s your deal, man? And he gives his whole backstory here. So it’s like this whole book is right here over the next couple of pages.
We get to learn about how Lobo is the last Czarnian, how he kills the entire civilization by poisoning the water supply, fights Superman, has a thing for Wonder Woman, turns into a woman at one point. That was a pretty weird one. This is good, I’ll go into this later. But I love the art style in here. Corona does just a fabulous job. Little rockets on the guns. It’s like cartoon violence, but with a gritty edge, so it’s not terribly violent, but it is kind of... if you’ve read these books, you know what I’m talking about. And you should read these. These are hilarious.
What’s Lobo number one about? Well, the Omni Mega Plus Entertainment Corporation, which I did laugh out loud when I read that the first time, the Mega Plus, you know exactly what they’re making fun of, cancels this bounty and instead basically wants to hire Lobo for his own reality TV show where they’re going to follow Lobo around as a bounty hunter and turn him into this anti-hero money-making star.
And Lobo is just pissed off because he once got paid for the bounty that was cancelled, and he ends up killing all of these robots, and of course they’re thrilled because it’s just a lot of fun to watch. And they end up hiring Lobo for his own TV show, which takes place in the second issue, which is a lot of fun.
But as you can see, the art and the color work, the whole style is just fabulous. It’s a lot of fun to look at. And it’s also really funny. It’s just a good read.
So let’s take a look at the creative team here at the end. Oh, there’s some ads for things that aren’t Hostess fruit pies, so I don’t care about any of these. Try not to give away the ending. Not like there’s really much of an ending, but here’s the creative team. So really awesome. Good fun read. $3.99 well spent. It’s Lobo.
Issue number one, 2026. And I’ll cover this later. You don’t really have to know who the Lobo character is to just dive into this one. I think it helps, but this is a good place to start. So check it out. Lobo issue number one here on comicbook.beer.
What kind of beer would work well with Lobo? I think that Lobo and Conan and the Barbarian would get along well, so I’m going to go with a really big kick-ass IPA, which I don’t have at the moment, but I’ll have one later in Lobo’s honor.
Nice belt buckle. Lobo, issue number one from DC.
