Conan the Barbarian #101 Story Summary

Sitting in the jungle, alone, Conan stares at a fire and thinks of Belit, who died in Conan the Barbarian #100. He roasts an antelope steak over the flames and ponders until a noise in the woods shakes him from his thoughts.

An arrow narrowly misses him, and Conan snuffs out the flames and grabs his sword, then cuts down the first attacker to rush out from the trees. More men follow, and Conan might have taken them had he not tripped over a root in the darkness, leaving him vulnerable to a club strike to the head. A warrior tribe pins Conan to the ground with spears and then ties him to a branch, where they carry him back to their village.

A man named Yarubo taunts Conan and promises death. Conan scowls and broods, though he does not let on that he can understand their language.

The next morning, Conan remains tied to a post in the Bamula Tribe's village. He watches them throw a captive into a strange pit in the center of town and hears screaming and slurping noises. Conan is next, but rather than face his death in a mystery pit, he frees himself, quickly grabs a spear from one of the guards, and challenges Yarubo to a duel in honor of their god Ekku.

Yarubo must fight, and fight they do, on a log placed over the strange pit filled with bones. As they prepare to battle with spears, Conan sees a giant, hairy spider below waiting to eat the loser.

The battle begins, and even though Yarubo starts strong, Conan learns quickly, and by using his superior Cimmerian sense of balance, he dodges spear thrusts and kicks Yarubo into the pit.

But, Yarubo's wife pulls out a knife and dives into the pit to save him! She will die quickly. Conan's sense of righteousness kicks in, and he leaps on top of the monster spider and stabs it repeatedly, eventually shoving the spear point through its brain. Yarubo, who has been saved by his wife and Conan, thanks Conan by trying to stab him. Conan, obviously, grabs the spear and stabs him (it is Conan's comic book, after all).

With Yarubo out of the way and the giant spider dead, Conan is now War-Chief of the Bamulas and gets Yarubo's wife, Felida. She doesn't seem pleased, and he says they will discuss it tomorrow.

Inside Yarubo's old hut, Conan sleeps deeply after the day's events. Felida moves to stab him where he lies, but doesn't have it in her.

The sun rises, and readers anxiously await Conan's exploits in Conan the Barbarian #102!
