80sComics.com taking a trip back to 1983 with GI Joe issue number 16. There’s a lot going on in this issue as you can tell by the cover. Night Attack, which starts out with a training exercise. The Joes are battling a bunch of cardboard cutouts and we get to meet two new GI Joes and a vehicle, the Wolverine, which takes out a whole bunch of HISS tanks with missiles. Dig Rock and Roll’s sweet mustache there.

Driven by Cover Girl rocking the 1983 hairstyle. And we also get to meet Tripwire.

Then we learn about how disorganized the Cobras are and that they all hate each other. Even though Cobra Commander says, “Propose a toast to victory through unity,” they’re basically all trying to backstab each other here. And the Baroness and Destro have a thing going on which plays throughout the whole book. He must not notice.

Cobra’s plan is to poison the money supply in the US Treasury. And of course, GI Joe is there to stop them, and Torpedo, who never removes his flippers. And he fights with a harpoon gun, which apparently looks pretty effective there, since he shoots one right through the Cobra soldier.

The Joes are engaged in a pretty big firefight outside. We get some bubble gum advertisements. They roll out a bunch of HISS tanks and there’s Torpedo once again still wearing his flippers. You’d think he would put on some sneakers, but nope. Flippers all the time. And here’s a sweet ad for the GI Joe Cobra Strike Atari game. Cobra’s looking for a few bad men. GI Joe is looking for Atari 2600.

There’s a lot of great action.

In this issue, good storyboarding and some heartbreak as Major Blood’s about to shoot Destro in the head but the Baroness, who’s in love with him, crashes that HISS tank, throws off his aim, but blows up with the tank.

But we know she’s not dead because she’s in the later issues. Probably isn’t good for her though. Additionally, there is a totally rad advertisement for Burger Time on the Intellivision coming soon. GI Joe issue number 16 is a great action-packed issue of GI Joe with a lot of interaction between our favorite Joes and Cobra villains. And I don’t know about you, but I’m really concerned about the Baroness. I hope she’s okay. She seems like such a nice girl. Very well-adjusted individual. GI Joe issue 16 on 80scomics.com..

Is there ever a situation when Torpedo would remove his flippers? Just something to think about for the weekend.
