King Conan #1 (Marvel Comics, 1980)

King Conan #1 (March 1980), published by Marvel Comics, is titled, "The Witch of the Mists." It's good to be the king. So good, in fact, that you get your very own comic book series about being the king in addition to your regular comic book series about being a belligerent barbarian.

King Conan #1 Story Summary

All hail the king! Conan is now the king of Aquilonia. He's older he's wiser, and he doesn't even have gray hair. In fact, Conan looks more or less the same 20 years after his barbarian exploits from Conan the Barbarian.

This is good news for those of us who enjoy a flagon of ale or fifteen. As it turns out, drinking and wenching your way through flea-infested taverns is the fountain of youth.

Conan was so bad-ass in 1980 that Marvel gave him three comic book series at the same time: Conan the Barbarian, Savage Sword of Conan, and King Conan. Start your King Conan adventure with issue #1, which begins with a little bit of backstory on Conan's life and exploits.

He's married, he has kids, and he still enjoys the occasional blood and gore-soaked battle. But today, his teenage son, Conn, has gotten himself lost in the woods and been kidnapped by a crazy witch lady.

Conn is taken to a mysterious castle where the prisoners are literally being boiled alive! Conan tracks Conn to the castle and gets himself captured so that the two of them can share some father-son time in a jail cell.

The bad news is that Thoth-Amon returns. The good news is that there's a sweet ad where Iron Man is hawking Hostess Fruit Pies (yum!)

Before Conan is killed by a group of crazy wizards, he breaks free, lights some of them on fire, and proceeds to kill everyone with his son by his side.

Thoth-Amon escapes. Conn learns a valuable life lesson. Conan proceeds to get drunk.
