Welcome back to ComicBook.beer where I'm taking a look at Transformers issue number 29 in the Energon Universe from Image and Skybound. Love the cover. Optimus fighting Megatron. The classic battle. Who'd have thought we'd still be reading this back in 1984 when Transformers first debuted from Marvel Comics. But now thanks to the lack of the Comics Code. See the Comics Code? The Comics Code ruined everything.
I don't think the Comics Code applies to this, which is why Megatron is literally eating an Autobot that he murdered in the previous issue. I feel like I shouldn't give away all this stuff, but it's probably best if you start this Transformers series from the beginning so that you know what's going on. Here's the creative team. I love Dan Mora's work. It's just a gorgeous issue, Transformers.
And like, you remember back in the day, I assume that most of you watching, actually maybe I shouldn't assume. I have no idea how old you are, but how about this: back in the day those of us who grew up with Transformers in the first time in the '80s played with these things and we just beat the crap out of them. At least I did. We just pounded the shit out of each of these things, you know, and bashed them over each other and lip-bumbled beyond repair and used soldering irons on them to poke out their eyeballs and stuff.
You know, it was a never-ending conflict between good and evil. Fighting with the Transformers. Occasionally the battle would spill over into the G.I. Joe and Star Wars universe and some Ewoks might have to get crushed and stomped on and blended and chainsawed or whatever. Flamethrowered.
But I guess my point here is that this issue is basically like just playing with all of your Transformers again. It's just one giant fight scene. Like what are they fighting about? It doesn't even matter. They're fighting because otherwise it would be a super boring series. Like if they were just sitting around sipping tea together and talking about Jane Austen novels, nobody would read the Transformers.
For your death! See that's way more exciting than just talking about peaceful crap. And now Megatron is leading an assault on the Ark to free Soundwave and also he just wants to kill all the Transformers. And Optimus Prime and the Autobots are there to stop him.
So there's a lot of stuff that's been happening in series. Thundercracker is now an Autobot, by the way. It's a laser beak. Love Laserbeak. Just look at the artwork on this. It's just gorgeous. This is about the most beautiful the Transformers have ever looked. That's not normally a word I would use to describe the Transformers, but it's just gorgeous. Just a really nice art style. The coloring work is just amazing. Sarah Stern does the coloring in this.
Good job, Sarah. Look at this. It's beautiful.
Rumble back there. Rumble was pretty cool too. Ravage.
We've got Arcee. This is like upgraded Arcee, Arcee Magnus or whatever. Free Soundwave. Devastator gets into the battle so this is just really nonstop fighting. Beachcomber played a pretty big part in some of the earlier issues or the issues prior to this one. Bulkhead.
Like what was the most exciting battle that your Transformers ever fought? I'm trying to think specific. Because I didn't have the G.I. Joe aircraft carrier, but I built my own G.I. Joe aircraft carrier. I'd have like a block of wood and stuff so I could land my Night Raven, and I had the jet with the backwards wings. I forget what it was called exactly.
He's going to kill Thundercracker because he's mad at his betrayal. Autobots are there to help him. That's right, Megatron's having his seizures. This leads us to the events in issue 31. I'm trying to think if there's any actual plot in this issue. There really isn't much. Just the constant fighting.
Anyway, eventually the Joes got involved. This is before the whole mashup of G.I. Joe, Transformers, and also Star Wars. So, Stormtroopers were in this giant battle and specifically I don't remember, but I do remember cutting a bunch of G.I. Joe figures in half because they had that weak point with the rubber band in the middle and soldering some of their faces together and stuff. I was a weird kid.
You know, this is probably as good a time as any to talk about these sound effects in the Transformers series. It's really one of the standout features. I wonder if other people have commented on this. I just love the style in which they draw the sound effects.
CHOOM!
Woof, wom. These are fun. You should just have an entire issue filled with sound effects. Wreck!
Now, I know what you're thinking. How can Mark possibly review a Transformers comic book without a beer in his C-3PO glass? That's a good question. I know many of you have this glass. Yeah. Trusty Star Wars glass. The problem is I'm running low on beer. Let's see.
Now that may look like a lot of beer. It was once a lot of beer, but unfortunately I just broke into the lower level. So into the basement of the 30-pack. This is like an emergency situation because you always need to have some Iron City on hand. I got one cold back here so let's open this up and see what sound effects it makes.
Checkpoint! Congratulations! There it is.
You can almost hear C-3PO talking about how delicious this beer is going to be. Mmm.
Did they ever show you this in the Burger King commercial? I don't remember.
I mean I'm sure you can use these glasses for other things. I don't know why you would.
This beer with the power of the Force, which has nothing to do with the Transformers, except they're both awesome. Mmm, now that I have had beer in my C-3PO glass, I can continue to review comic book. Mmm. By the power of Burger King and Star Wars, that beer is delicious.
In conclusion, this is a fun issue. The whole series is great, and I really recommend that you start at number one.
Now just work your way through. You can get a lot of these as trade paperbacks now, the older issues now as trade paperbacks, depending on when you're watching this. These Star Wars glasses are a little harder to come by though.
You know, it does impart a little bit of Tauntaun flavor and I kind of appreciate that.
So that's it. Transformers number 29 in the Energon Universe. Highly recommend it. I love this guy's cover work. Really cool.
You know, they look thirsty. I think they might get along if they would just sit back and enjoy some delicious Iron City and Star Wars glasses.
The Force is strong with this beer.
